In this context, 'courage' is best defined as the mental and moral ability to overcome fear and take action. This definition emphasizes that courage is not the absence of fear but rather the capacity to act in the face of it. It recognizes that individuals may feel fear yet still choose to confront their challenges head-on, demonstrating strength of character and resolve.

Courage involves making thoughtful decisions despite experiencing apprehensions or fears, which can be particularly relevant in challenging environments such as those encountered in correctional facilities. It reflects the ethical responsibility to stand up for what is right and to tackle difficult situations, showcasing both mental fortitude and moral integrity. This definition makes it clear that courage is about the process of dealing with fear rather than simply feeling brave or avoiding danger.
